CONTINUED... Episode #10: Inspired by "My Blood" (Track 4 from Trench) You have made it to the third, and last, installment of my analysis of the song "My Blood" by Twenty One Pilots. This last theory is the most controversial because there is a lot of speculation around the meaning of TOP songs and who Tyler Joseph sings to in most of them, RE: "Ode to Sleep" " I'm not free, I asked forgiveness three times The same account of the singer's denial alludes to the biblical accounts of Peter denying Jesus three times before His crucifixion. This suggests that whom he adores and sings to is the Christian manifestation of God. In the same song, he continues to say he doesn't want to have the "sun's" (read: Son's) blood on his hands, which brings me to my final theory... THEORY #3: The big brother is Jesus Christ. This isn't a reach. He is called the "firstborn" son of God, plus, there is a preponderance of evidence to support this theory. It also bolsters Theory #1. More on that later. For this scenario to work, we must assume that the song is from the point of view of Jesus. It is the reply Tyler was waiting for in "Trees". The Lord has not forgotten about him, as he pleaded in "Doubt". Jesus has come to find him as he begged in "Polarize". He has not let him be a "Goner". "Both the one who makes people holy and those who are made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters." So when the song's narrator invites, "Stay with me, my blood", He is essentially telling the little brother characterization that he will protect him and he is safe. Here, Jesus is the "good shepherd" protecting those who are weak, or in need. "The LORD is my shepherd; Stay with me may also be Jesus imploring his little brother not to "Fall Away" as in from the church, and not to stray from the path of the righteous, as advised in Proverbs 4. The big brother here wants his little brother to know that he will be with him anywhere. He will protect him from anything. The big brother in the song says he'll go into the "lion's den", which references the biblical story of Daniel who was unjustly thrown in a lion's den as punishment. The Lord sends an angel to close the lions' mouths and spare his life. " The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace." But all of this culminates in the idea that Jesus gave his life for his brother(s, sisters, spiritual family). He is the shepherd who protects us, accompanies us, and gave the ultimate sacrifice, as he promises in this scripture: " I am the good shepherd. But how does that relate to Tyler as our metaphorical big brother? Well, as Jesus has loved and sacrificed for the little brother (Tyler), so he is loving and sacrificing himself (albeit metaphorically) for fans/listeners of Twenty One Pilots. Sounds kinda corny when I put it that way, but here is the scripture: "My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. TLDR; Jesus is the (firstborn) "big brother" to Tyler the "little brother" (in Christ). Subsequently, Tyler is the "big brother" to his "frens" in the fanbase. I believe that establishes an expectation for brotherhood among the Clique, and beyond. That's a lot of baggage for a <4 minute song.
