CONTINUED... Episode #10: Inspired by "My Blood" (Track 4 from Trench) Welcome back to part 2 of 3 of my song analysis for "My Blood". If you missed the first one, feel free to read that one, too. Let's jump right in. THEORY #2: The big brother represents Tyler to his actual siblings, since he cannot always be physically there for them. I'm fairly certain that he's the oldest sibling in his family, so he makes a good candidate for big brother, although birth order is not the only thing I based this theory on. Here is an excerpt from "Stressed Out" where he references one of his brothers, in particular: "Sometimes a certain smell will take me back to when I was young. "That's a completely different song," you say. "Stay on topic," you say. "My tummy's rumbling, ".... wait, I said that. Anyway, the aforementioned candle is referenced in the first "My Blood" video, where Tyler is seen working in his studio with a candle burning in the foreground. Presumably, this imagery alludes to his brother, or family by extension, who understands where he came from. It isn't a stretch to say that family is important to the singer/songwriter in this case because he has included them in the video for the breakout single "Stressed Out", mentioned them in songs, and even written songs for them. In addition, the title "My Blood" can also be synonymous with "my kin" or "my family", i.e. someone who shares the same blood(line) as him or is "blood" related to him. In the song, he sings: " Do they know I was grown with you?" Considering that he's not a vegetable, I interpret this to mean he was raised with the individual he is singing about. He even mentioned one of his brothers by name in "Lane Boy" on the Blurryface album. While were on that tangent, in "Lane Boy" he makes the point that he is protective of his family. "If you get in between someone I love and me, The protective older brother described as fighting off haters and grabbing bats in "My Blood" sounds reminiscent of the Blurryface area one pledging to protect the ones he loves, regardless of career, status, or morality.
So, until next week readers. I have a third and final theory to unleash on the interwebs, and it will be the most controversial yet. See you next Thursday.
